 Retaining Good Mental Health of Employees.


As you all know mental health of an employee matters most in an effective profit of an organisation. “STRESS” this is a very familiar word in major organizations. And this is the major factor for poor mental health. According to an study taken in 2019 in USA "GALLUP EMOTION SURVEY"- one half of the population are directly or indirectly affected by over stress. And 1 in 5 are aggressive or short tempered throughout the working hours.

This definitely leads to physical illness like thyroids ,diabetes mellitus ,angina ,and other major cardiovascular diseases.



 

It is said that increasingly, being recognized that the mental health of the employee matters a lot and it directly affects the overall performance of the organisation. The mental health impacts in productivity ,creativity, profits. This plays an major role in contribution of them in their professional and personal lives.

 Work related stress leads to poor productivity and errors. Work related stress can induce heart diseases back pain migraine, and some major gastro-intestinal related diseases like IBS . and also if this continuously affects it can lead to stress related anxiety , depression and poor decision making.



CONTROLLING WORK - RELATED STRESS AND IMPROVING MENTAL WELL-BEING AT THE WORKPLACE


The main reasons for the work-related stress are as follows

  1. Relationship with higher officials
  2. Work family conflict
  3.         Problems with colleagues 
  4. Performance pressure

RELATIONSHIP WITH HIGHER OFFICIALS



Some bosses are hard to handle. They don’t think from the view of the employee. They are so orthodox that they don’t even have a vision or mission. The best way to overcome this is to communicate freely with the bosses. Find suitable time and meet them personally. A free conversation can clear the root of any dispute. We got to explain clearly what we feel and ask his suggestions as well. Some bosses thinking that some employees are multi-talented and multitasking and increase the work load.so they fall in depression.


WORK FAMILY CONFLICT


This is a major factor.  They cannot spend time with their loved once. They will be more anxious to do so. Thinking of that they’ll fall into depressions.

Problem at home will affect the performance at work.


PROBLEMS WITH COLLEAGUES


Challenging between colleagues makes the situation worsen Problems with colleagues can be easily solved by amicable discussion or mutual agreements.



PERFORMANCE PRESSURE


Unrealistic targets or goals which cannot be achieved by an individual will automatically create high work load and extremely long working hours.


Conclusion 


  • Employees are one of the most valuable asset. We as employers should provide enough support to employees to benefit from counseling to ensure good mental health.
  • We should ensure that employees have access to treatment for mental health problems when needed.
  • We should periodically study the workplace stress through appropriate surveys conducted ethically.
  • Based on the stress surveys, we should  initiate some programs as following:
    • ♦ information and awareness programs 
    • ♦ employee and manager training
    • ♦ promoting mental health initiative
    • ♦ training in strategies

By receiving proper mental health care, productivity increases, absenteeism decreases, and total medical costs decrease.
